A Peak Proposal — Mountainous Engagement

The question, or the yes still glowing after it — an engagement morning in the high air.

An engagement in the mountains is the story before the story — the giddy, disbelieving hours right after a yes. We climbed a little, laughed a lot, and let the two of them be as new to it as they felt.

It is also the perfect rehearsal — a relaxed hour with the camera that makes the wedding day feel like second nature.

Fifteen minutes in a cable car and Innsbruck turns into a rumour somewhere below. You step out at Hafelekar, and the noise of the city simply stops. There is snow, there is a low winter sun, and there is the particular kind of cold that makes people stand closer together without being asked.

We did not have the mountain to ourselves — nobody does up there. It is a public station with a viewing terrace and a signpost to the toilets. Twenty metres past the crowd, behind a bank of snow, there was no one at all. That is usually all it takes.

The ring came out with the sun directly behind them: the hardest light to photograph, and the only one worth having. Then there was a jump, because there is always a jump.

What you are left with is not a set of portraits. It is the hour you were both still slightly stunned — before the dress, before the guest list, before anyone asked about a date.
