Wooden Boats and Lakeside Pizza — a Lago di Braies Elopement

Emerald water, wooden rowboats and a passing summer shower — Sussette and Gabriel eloped at Lago di Braies and baked their own pizza by the lake.

The morning came in grey and wet, cloud sitting low on the Croda del Becco and rain freckling the old wooden jetty. It changed nothing. Under a clear umbrella they read their vows to the sound of the water, exchanged rings among the moored rowboats, and then pushed one out onto the lake — just the two of them, drifting on that impossible green while the mist moved across the cliffs.

When the shower grew heavier we ducked under the boathouse roof and lit the pizza oven — and that became the day. Dough tossed, a wood-fired margherita slid onto the peel, both of them laughing over the flames while Braies steamed behind them. The rain passed, as it always does, and they finished with a spray of champagne in an alpine meadow. It is the kind of day rain can’t spoil — and we plan it so a grey sky is never a problem, only a plot twist.

They booked Braies and woke to rain — and it turned out to be the best thing that could have happened. Mist poured off the peaks, the wooden rowboats sat glossy and empty, and after the vows a lakeside pizza under a dripping sky became the warmest, most them part of the whole day. Grey is not a ruined day here; often it is the story.

We never cancel for weather — we work with it. We come prepared with clear umbrellas and dry cloths, keep a flexible eye on the forecast and, on the bigger days, hold a backup morning. So if you wake to rain at Braies, do not despair: it might just be the making of your favourite photographs.
